This independent study course will teach you everything you need to start creating your own natural perfumes at home, and it will give you a strong foundation for more advanced study. Please note there is no support from a tutor during this course. A certificate of study is available on completion.
You will be able to access the course for 6 months following enrolment. You must complete the course in this time as you won't be able to re-enrol after 6 months.
IMPORTANT: This is a completely self-directed course and learning is done using coursenotes in PDF format, slides and short videos. There are no classes or tutorials, and no contact or support with a tutor. You can book half hour consultations with Marina Barcenilla at an additional cost if required. You'll be able to access the course for 6 months following enrolment. You must complete the course in this time as you won't be able to re-enrol after 6 months.
Syllabus
Safety and good working practices: Essential knowledge about perfume ingredients to ensure that you work in a safe manner and to help you set up your working space. This module includes:
- Safety considerations and hazards.
- The working environment. Safety self-assessment.
- Design and prepare your workspace.
- Preparation, essential tools and things that will make your life as a perfumery student much easier!
Training your nose: Learn to smell like a perfumer and to evaluate perfumery ingredients and fragrances. This module includes:
- Developing your olfactory memory.
- Perfumery language and vocabulary.
- Smell like a perfumer: organoleptic evaluation of perfumery ingredients.
- Keeping records of your evaluations and formulae.
Classification of perfumery ingredients: Learn to classify ingredients according to their origin and odour profile. This module includes:
- Raw materials used in perfumery.
- Extraction methods.
- Classification of ingredients into aromatic groups.
- Extraction methods.
Perfume creation: Learn how to create basic accords and harmonious perfume blends. This module includes:
- Working with dilutions vs. working with pure raw materials.
- How to create dilutions.
- Fragrance families.
- Create vertical and horizontal accords.
- Create your own perfume.
